Project: "Human Rights and Peace-Building - Different Agendas but the Same Goal?" Skriv ut

A major research project within the Research Program is called Human Rights and Peace-Building – Different Agendas but the Same Goal? The purpose of this project is to address how human rights and peace-building relate to each other, both on theoretical and practical levels, in order to provide insights and experiences useful for theory-building as well as education, and professional work in development cooperation.

The project will extend its work into the period of 2008-2009. During the course of the project occasional papers and shorter texts related to the overall theme of the project are published.

For the moment the following reports are available from this on-going project. The reports, which are both in Swedish, English and Spanish, can be downloaded as pdf-files.

1. Mänskliga rättigheter och fredsbyggande – skilda agendor men samma mål? (“Human Rights and Peace-Building – Different Agendas but the Same Goal?")
This report is a presentation, in Swedish, of the research project with the same name. Authors: Göran Gunner and Kjell-Åke Nordquist. Click to load this report

2. The Crossroads of Human Rights and Peace-Building – an ongoing debate.
This report, in English, is an inventory of issues and dimensions that are brought to the fore in situations where human rights and peace-building perspectives are applied by agencies and organisations in their local work. The seemingly harmoniously related perspectives do not always fit together in concrete situations where resources are scarce and priorities need to be made. How could this situation be dealt with?

3. Att konfronteras med sitt våldsamma förflutna för en hållbar fred – Israel och Palestina. (“To be confronted with a violent past for a durable peace – Israel and Palestine”)
This report, in Swedish, compares peace proposals and agreements in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, over the last decades. In particular, the dimensions of reconciliation are analysed and discussed. Author: Jaana Rokka. Click to load this report

4. Derechos Humanos y Construccon de Paz - Un mismo objetivo, agendas diferentes? (“Human Rights and Peace-Building – The same objective but different agendas?”)
This report in Spanish is a collection of papers contributed by a number of non-governmental organizations in Guatemala and Colombia who – following seminars in 2007 - have reflected on their own work and experiences on the overlapping of human rights and peace-building – something that may lead both to cooperation and conflict. What does it mean to build peace in a country where human rights are violated throughout history, but also today, in the on-going everyday life of its citizens?

5. No Shortcuts to Peace - International Development Cooperation, Human Rights, and Peacebuilding. A documentation and some reflections on a Human Rights-based approach to Peace and Security.
In this report the question of human rights and peace-building is put into a development perspective. The author has a long-standing experience from national and international development work and he uses the experiences from his work as a relief to the on-going discussion of today on the overlapping and potential tension between human rights and peace-building. This creates a good illustration to the problematique as a whole, and creates a challenging text for the reader to digest.
