Many Christians have left the Middle East and a considerable number of them have come to Sweden. This course is divided between the study of Christian churches in the Middle East and of those Christians from the Middle East now living in Sweden. Part of the course takes place in Jerusalem, in cooperation with the Bilda Christian Study Centre. Students will make contact with representatives of churches in Israel and Palestine. The other part of the course looks at the Christians from the Middle East who are now in Sweden, examining sociologically interesting factors such as migration and religion, adaptation to new culture, and the function of religion in sustaining identity and maintaining tradition.
Course Outcomes/Learning Outcomes: - as part of a Bachelor’s Degree On completing the course the student should:
- display a good general understanding of the religious map of the Middle East, especially regarding the Christian churches;
- have the ability to reflect on the functions of religion as resource, identity and motive power in the political and social realities of the Middle East, based on personal experience of conditions there;
- be able to appreciate both the positive and the negative aspects of being a Christian in the places where Jesus lived and worked;
- be able to analyse some of the problems which are connected with religion and migration, such as maintenance of tradition, identity and adaptation.
Course Outcomes/Learning Outcomes - as part of a Master’s Degree On completing the course the student should:
- display a thorough knowledge of the religious map of the Middle East, especially regarding the Christian churches;
- have a significantly deepened ability to reflect on the functions of religion as resource, identity and motive power in the political and social realities of the Middle East, based on personal experience of conditions there;
- be able to analyse and articulate a comprehensive understanding of the positive and negative aspects of being a Christian in the places where Jesus lived and worked;
- be able independently and constructively to identify and analyse problems connected with religion and migration, such as maintenance of tradition, identity and adaptation.
